Even while the synthesizers pop and pulsate on BT's latest studio disc, a couple of musical elements also beat prominently above the surface. These Hopeful Machines, the Maryland artist's sixth album, towers as the most melodic and confidently vocal CD of his 15-year recording career. The ambitious, nearly two-hour two-disc set is a sprawling showcase for BT's command of sweeping melodies. It highlights the man born Brian Transeau's newfound confidence as a vocalist. He sings lead on four tracks, including a lovely, folklike cover of the Psychedelic Furs' "The Ghost in You," and handles background vocals on two cuts.
