MB/M Initiatives
Music Business Journal. Launched in 2005 MBJ was a student idea, and is now become a trusted source of music business analysis. Professor Peter Alhadeff, MBJ’s faculty advisor, oversees publication of seven annual issues distributed in hard copy and to 50,000 online readers. Visit www.thembj.org.
Heavy Rotation Records. The HRR record label was founded in 1995 to give students real-world record industry experience. Students learn how to pick what’s right for the record by selecting eight artists out of hundreds of submissions. Among the chosen: Annie Clark, Passion Pit, Click 5. HRR is why Nils Gums ’06 (manager of the band Karmin) says he came to Berklee where he met his future business partner Matt Maltese ’04.
MEIEA. In 2009, Berklee first hosted the Music & Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA) conference, an international forum for the global music and entertainment industries.
Curricular Partnership with InHolland University in Haarlem, Netherlands. Associate Professor Andrea Johnson cultivated collaborations with InHolland for international music licensing courses. The MB/M department hosted a visit from InHolland students last year, and Berklee students will visit this fall.
Annual music business forums. The MB/M department regularly invites high-profile guest speakers for events such as the Envisioning 21st Century Music Business Models series, the Zafris Lecture series, and various other symposia on a variety of music business topics.
