The Art of Transcription: From Emulation to Innovation

Course Number
PSIJ-333
Description

This course explores transcription as a creative, developmental, and artistic process rather than a mechanical task. Students will learn to hear deeply, capture music by ear, and assimilate material from the masters to develop their own musical voice. Through transcription, analysis, and performance, students will extract harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic ideas; explore phrasing and tone; and reimagine them through improvisation and composition. The course bridges imitation and innovation, empowering students to transform influence into originality and to design their own lifelong transcription practice.
