Black Music of Europe, Asia, and the African Diaspora

Course Number
AFST-327
Description

This course reflects on the presence and influence of African culture on the continents of Europe and Asia, tracing its impact on selected locales and across various historical time periods. Specific attention will be given to the societies of antiquity and the subsequent historical expansion around the Mediterranean, the Indian subcontinent, and the Arabian peninsula. Through readings, lectures, films, discussions, and projects, students will explore the intersections of art, music, identity construction, and larger socio-historical currents that have shaped the spread of Black culture beyond the more frequently articulated theater of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade in the Americas.
